On March 8, Panasonic took a further step to contributing to create a green Vietnam by organising the tree planting programme to plant and donate 10,000 trees for the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve (Thai Binh) with the active participation of 120 employees.

This year, in addition to realising the company’s vision, Panasonic's tree planting programme aims to strengthen local coastal wetland areas and enhance CO2 reduction potential.

In collaboration with the Centre for Natural Resources and Environmental Communication (CNREC) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, 120 Panasonic employees travelled hundreds of kilometres to the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve, working alongside local authorities and residents to plant 10,000 mangrove apple (Sonneratia caseolaris) trees. This species is ideal for the Thai Thuy mangrove forest due to its salt tolerance, adaptability to muddy soil conditions, strong root system that prevents erosion, and ability to create habitats for various species while offering high economic value.

The Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve plays a significant role in preserving biodiversity in Thai Binh and the Red River World Biosphere Reserve. Moreover, mangrove forests act as carbon storage, absorbing three to four times more carbon than terrestrial forests, making them a vital tool in combating climate change.

Taka Fujino, representative of Panasonic Vietnam, said this was the first time Panasonic had planted mangrove trees in northern Vietnam.

He emphasised the benefits that mangrove forests bring to local provinces and the country, explaining that they absorb more CO2 than any other ecosystem and provide various environmental and community advantages, including biodiversity conservation, coastal protection, and economic benefits. He noted that this commitment had driven Panasonic’s focus on mangrove reforestation in recent years. This year also marks a milestone for the company, as it has reached a record of planting one million trees in Vietnam, becoming the first foreign direct investment company to achieve this within three years.

He added that Panasonic is committed to supporting environmental and educational initiatives for Vietnam’s wellness and sustainable development. The "Panasonic for a Green Vietnam" programme has been implemented nationwide for more than a decade.

The annual tree planting initiative carries the Eco Relay message, encouraging each employee to act as a sustainability ambassador. In addition to tree planting, participants engage in various community activities, including donating ceiling fans to Thuy Xuan Secondary School to improve learning conditions, planting trees in the school garden to create a green space for teachers and students, and hosting STEM and environmental education classes for more than 100 students on the topic of sustainable energy through interactive sessions. Other activities include a biodiversity conservation and sustainable living workshop for local villagers, led by a sustainability expert, as well as cleaning two kilometres of sea dykes in Thuy Xuan commune, removing residential waste.

This year’s initiative left a strong impression on Panasonic employees. Bui Minh Hang, a member of Panasonic Sales Vietnam, described it as a meaningful and engaging activity, allowing him to contribute to Vietnam’s greenery while working alongside colleagues for a good cause. As a native of Thai Binh province, he felt proud to support mangrove reforestation, which helps protect his hometown from natural disasters while inspiring younger generations to care for the environment.

Nguyen Anh Tuan, head of Thai Binh Forest Ranger Department, highlighted the importance of the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve as both a valuable natural asset and a habitat for rare flora and fauna. He noted that by planting trees today, Panasonic is helping to preserve this natural heritage for future generations.

As a key partner of the scheme, Nguyen Viet Dung, director of the Centre for Natural Resources and Environment Communication, commended Panasonic’s long-standing tree planting efforts. He said that over the past decade, the programme had delivered tangible results, not only in the number of trees planted but also in raising environmental awareness among local communities.

By the end of 2024, Panasonic had announced it had planted over one million trees across Vietnam. Since 2014, the company has successfully planted and donated more than 1.3 million trees in 27 localities through two key initiatives: "Panasonic for a Green Vietnam," which engages Panasonic employees, and "Live Green and Wellness," which has involved partners and customers since 2022. With this achievement, Panasonic has become the fastest foreign enterprise to plant one million trees in Vietnam in just three years.
