The first Heritage Golf Tournament attracted 144 golfers |
The tournament attracted 144 golfers with the mission of combining sport and heritage conservation.
The tournament was held in response to Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day on November 23, following a series of activities at the third Ninh Binh Festival with the theme "Heritage Flow", held from November 24-30.
Nguyen Mạnh Cuong, director of Ninh Binh Department of Culture and Sports, said, “Organising a heritage golf tournament aims to enhance awareness about preserving and promoting our cultural heritage values, whilst simultaneously promoting the socioeconomic development of the locality.”
“The success of the first tournament will form the basis for expanding projects that combine sports and heritage conservation, as well as projects that promote the development of the cultural heritages in Ninh Binh and other localities,” Cuong said.
During the event, the organising board held a seminar themed “Connecting heritage and golf: opportunities and challenges” on November 30.
At the seminar, experts and representatives of departments and organisations analysed the potential, challenges, and pending issues facing golf, and the combination of golf and heritage preservation.
All delegates agreed that to enhance the effectiveness of the concept, close coordination is needed between local cultural, sports and tourism management agencies and investors in building golf courses and suitable tourism infrastructure, creating quality tourism products.
“Organising international golf events in heritage areas will be a great opportunity to promote the image of Vietnam to the world while promoting cultural and economic exchanges. By expanding cooperation with countries with a solid foundation in golf, Ninh Binh can attract investment, advanced technology, and learn from foreign partners to organise professional tournaments and build golf courses that meet international standards,” said Vuong Duy Bien, former Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
“The heritage golf tournament forward to international scale will be an important bridge to help promote the image and unique values of Ninh Binh's heritage to the international community. At the same time, these events will also attract the attention of the global media, creating momentum for the development of golf tourism and enhancing the Vietnamese heritage tourism brand,” said Bien.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, director of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, said, “Despite the potential, Vietnam's golf tourism is still facing some challenges, including high tax rates. The application of a 20 per cent special consumption tax on golf-related services makes it difficult for Vietnam to compete with other Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Malaysia. In addition, most travel companies do not offer golf tours, so the market's potential is not being fully. The tours on offer are still simple and not diverse, lacking accompanying services such as cultural experiences, heritage exploration, shopping, and cuisine.”
“Besides, a lack of connection between tourism industry components, including golf courses, travel agencies, hotels, and tourist places, causes failure to create comprehensive product packages for tourists. Communication in this field is still weak, and television channels and social networks have not been effectively utilised to promote golf tourism,” said Khanh.
