A pumped-storage hydroelectric model |
This ambitious project, discussed during a recent session with Quang Tri People’s Committee on January 24, aims to harness the potential of the region’s hydropower resources.
The proposed the Quang Tri pumped-storage hydroelectric plant is envisioned for the vicinity of the existing the Quang Tri hydropower reservoir in Huong Linh commune, Huong Hoa district.
"We're looking at a comprehensive development timeline of about seven years, targeting operation commencement beyond 2030," said Le Quoc Vu, deputy general director of EVNGENCO2.
The plant's unique design involves generating electricity during peak power demand periods and utilising off-peak hours to pump water back to the upper reservoir.
"This facility will play a crucial role in balancing the national grid's load, particularly benefiting the southern regions with its 500MW capacity," Vu added.
The facility is expected to operate for an average of seven hours daily. Investors underscore the project's vital role in meeting Vietnam's increasing electricity needs in line with its economic growth.
"Not only does this project hold strong economic and financial viability, but it also promises substantial employment opportunities for locals throughout its construction and operational phases," Vu said.
Ha Sy Dong, Deputy chairman of Quang Tri People’s Committee, highlighted the province's commitment to renewable energy.
"Quang Tri has been at the forefront of renewable energy, with several projects already making a significant impact. We see this new hydroelectric plant as a continuation of our sustainable energy journey," Dong said.
He also expressed strong support for the project, urging CSGI to advance with the necessary surveys and research promptly. "Quang Tri is ready to provide all necessary support to facilitate this project, ensuring access to our preferential policies for a smooth implementation process," he added.
