The Ministry of Information and Communications on May 10 held a roundtable to discuss cooperating with the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (IMEC) in semiconductor chip production.

Nguyen Thien Nghia, deputy director of the ministry's Department of Information and Communications Industry, said international cooperation was essential in the chip industry, and Vietnam was joining such cooperation.

“Vietnam is set to participate in tasks like testing, packaging, and providing chip design services for global giants, per the centre's recommendations. After that, Vietnam will consider advanced tasks of production or further testing and packaging,” he said.

Lode Lauwers, IMEC senior vice president, business development and sales, said the IMEC was willing to cooperate in training workers in the chip design sector to build a strong workforce in Vietnam.

He proposed the two sides would collaborate in exchanging students and building a research and development center for training Vietnamese learners.

At the event, the IMEC representative shared experiences with Vietnamese businesses, including FPT and Viettel, and some Vietnamese universities.

According to deputy minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Huy Dung, Vietnam strives to become a part of the global supply chain in the semiconductor sector in various tasks like designing, developing, and integrating into hardware.

Going forward, the ministry and IMEC will take the initial steps in the cooperation with the focus on human resource training, one of the most important factors to developing the chip design industry in Vietnam.
