On “International Coastal Cleanup Day 20,” on the morning of September 21, C.P. Vietnam Corporation (CPV) partnered with the Ho Chi Minh Youth Social Work Centre (YSW) to organise a “Coastal Cleanup” at Phuoc Hung commune in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

Along a 300-metre stretch of beach, over 150 youth from various government levels, organisations, businesses, and residents took part.

Attending the event, Pham Tien Dat, secretary of Long Dien District Youth Union, delivered the opening speech, encouraging participants and expressing gratitude to the organisers and volunteers for their efforts in cleaning the beach.

Representative of CPV, Worawit Arunraksa, assistant vice president of the Sustainable Development Department, along with more than 35 CPV hatchery volunteers, took part in litter collection while raising awareness about reducing plastic waste and sorting rubbish.

The coastal cleanup has become an annual activity for CPV, contributing to the overarching goal of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to minimise plastic waste in the ocean, keep beaches clean, and protect the environment.

The initiative also encourages fishermen and the local community to actively participate in waste collection, proper disposal, and waste sorting, fostering green living habits and marine conservation, which support sustainable economic development.

During the morning, CPV volunteers and residents collected and sorted over 422kg of waste into categories: reusable and recyclable waste; hazardous waste; and other waste, which was then handed over to relevant authorities for processing and recycling.

Marine waste is one of the greatest threats to ocean ecosystems. If not properly collected and managed, waste can drift into the ocean, posing danger to marine life, such as birds, fish, and other animals, which may become entangled or ingest the debris. Microplastics from waste can also enter the human food chain, severely affecting health.

Recognising this issue, the CPV believes that partnering with the community to raise awareness about coastal cleanup is not only a short-term solution but also a crucial stepping-stone towards sustainable change.
