Ba Ria-Vung Tau to develop coastal urban areas

Ba Ria-Vung Tau aims to host a chain of coastal urban areas with strong advantages in developing the maritime economy and the oil and gas industry.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau has 305.4km coastline and more than 100sq.km continental shelf with many potentials and advantages related to the sea. With the advantage of having a deepwater port that is most notable in the region, the province boasts the specific regional importance.

Being strategically located nearby Ho Chi Minh City and having the favourable weather, land and natural resources, the province has new advantages to promote maritime economy, industry, focusing on oil and gas, seafood and the development of the chain of coastal urban areas.

Mai Trung Hung, deputy director of local Department of Construction, stated that Ba Ria-Vung Tau has a chain of three coastal towns which play leading roles in driving socioeconomic development, including Vung Tau city and the towns of Long Hai and Phuoc Hai.

In the province’s planning for 2021-2030, with vision towards 2050, Ba Ria-Vung Tau considers tourism to be one of the five important pillars.

Additionally, Ba Ria-Vung Tau also features Con Dao as a coastal urban area. Currently, the province is planning three coastal urban areas: Ho Tram, Binh Chau, and Loc An. Under this plan, it is expected that by 2025, the province would be home to seven coastal towns.

The whole archipelago of Con Dao will also be developed into an island coastal town. Accordingly, Ho Tram will become a coastal tourism town for the province and Xuyen Moc district, serving as the economic service and tourism centre, is gearing towards becoming a grade-5 city by 2025.

According to leading experts and architects, in order to develop the maritime economy, Ba Ria- Vung Tau needs to concentrate resources into expanding the chain of coastal urban areas and pave the ways for advancing into the sea to boost the regional connectivity.

To realise this goal, the province needs to adjust the planning in the most sustainable way with high effectiveness and keeping the unique identity, at the same time, reserving resources for the future.

In the province’s planning for 2021-2030, with vision towards 2050, Ba Ria-Vung Tau considers tourism to be one of the five important pillars. The planning outlines developing tourism as the driving force for development in the southeast coastal area with a chain of tourism urban areas including Vung Tau, Long Hai, Phuoc Hai, Loc An, Ho Tram, Binh Chau, and Con Dao national tourist area.

Among localities in the southeast, Ba Ria-VungTau is the only locality with a long and stunning beach. The province is also home to appealing national landscapes, along with distinct cultural festivals.

Leveraging strategic location near to big regional economic centres with the high density of population, a market of more than 18 million consumers with an average income 1.5 times the national average, and an expanding middle-income class, Ba Ria-Vung Tau has met all the conditions to become a potential hub for tourism in the southeast region, as well as for the development of a chain of coastal tourism urban areas.
