The board of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham Hanoi) announced the election of Joseph Uddo as its new chairman for 2024 on January 4.

Uddo succeeds John Rockhold, who held the post in 2022 and 2023. “I look forward to working with AmCham members to further foster and deepen economic, social, and business ties between Vietnam and the US,” Uddo said.

“It is with great humility that I take on this position to strengthen AmCham as the voice of American businesses in Vietnam to create a competitive and sustainable business climate for companies and investors here. I look forward to working with my AmCham colleagues across the country to ensure the organisation’s ongoing success,” he continued.

Uddo currently serves as president of AES Vietnam, the largest US investor in Vietnam and a next-generation energy company with over four decades of experience helping the world transition to clean and reliable energy.

He is responsible for all aspects of AES’ business activities in Vietnam, including the operation of the 1,242MW Mong Duong 2 Thermal Power Plant, the development of the 2,250MW Son My 2 combined cycle gas turbine power plant, together with the Son My liquefied natural gas terminal project, the development of renewable energy projects, and the commercialisation of AES renewable technology investments such as Fluence and 5B. AES has offices in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Thuan, and Quang Ninh.

Before moving to Vietnam, Uddo served as vice president of Market Development at AES, managing a commercial portfolio that included developing energy resilience solutions for the US government as well as various business development objectives across AES’ international businesses. He previously served in various energy policy and diplomatic roles in the US government.

Founded in 1994, AmCham Hanoi is a non-profit organisation whose primary mission is to increase trade and investment between the US and Vietnam.

AmCham members represent billions of dollars in foreign investment, tens of thousands of direct employees, hundreds of thousands of indirect employees, and a significant share of Vietnam’s exports and tax revenues. The US is one of the top foreign investors in Vietnam and its biggest export market.

AmCham works closely with diverse partners in the Vietnamese government to enable a business environment that attracts additional investment and drives innovation and sustainable growth in the country.
