Son La wants to develop $99.56 million Na San Airport |
The upgraded airport project is estimated to have the total investment capital of VND2.29 trillion ($99.56 million), mobilised from the state budget, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the provincial budget, and other sources.
According to Son La People’s Committee,Na San airport is located in the central north-west region and plays important role in ensuring national security. In addition, it would also improve the socioeconomic development, creating a breakthrough in transport infrastructure, and attracting domestic and foreign investors.
Le Hong Minh, Deputy Chairman of Son La People’s Committee, has been proactive in co-operating to study and propose plans to develop Na San Airport.
At present, ACV completed the pre-feasibility report for the airport. It is submitting the investment planning to the prime minister for approval.
The airport will handle one million passengers a year and will include a terminal, an office building, a flight zone, and related infrastructure. Besides, the investor will build a transport system to link the terminal with the National Highway No.6.
Na San Airport was constructed in 1950 by the French. It lies 187 kilometres from Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport and 110km from Dien Bien Phu Airport in northwestern Dien Bien province. It was considered to have an important role in ensuring national security and economic development of Son La and the northwest region.
During 1978-2004, a number of the airport's components were upgraded in order to ensure safe flights. In 2004, the operation of the airport was suspended as the airport was found to be too rundown.
