Viettel Marathon 2024 was jointly organised by the Asian Athletics Association, the Vietnam Athletics Federation, and Viettel in cooperation with the athletics federations of Cambodia and Laos.
Over 10,000 marathoners from 24 countries and territories will compete across many categories. The Viettel Marathon Series 2024's Vietnam was a vibrant, colourful run, starting from the My Dinh National Stadium and going through the districts of South Tu Liem, Hoai Duc, Dan Phuong, Phuc Tho, Quoc Oai, and North Tu Liem.
The marathon series impressed representatives from the Asian Athletics Association, the athletics federations of countries, as well as technical advisory representatives.
For the first time, a marathon series in Vietnam attracted members of the national teams of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia in the elite class. Being licensed by the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) with the AIMS-standard routes, the Viettel Marathon covers more than 80 per cent of the routes with the participation of relevant forces to ensure safety and create the best experience for runners.
At the Viettel Marathon Series 2024's Vietnam leg, Nguyen Thi Oanh set a new national record for the full marathon category. She managed to finish first in a time of 2:39.49.
In the men's race of 42.19km, Hoang Nguyen Thanh has surpassed the senior runners at last kilometres to cross the finish line first. He becomes the winner of the full marathon category at the Viettel Marathon Series 2024's Vietnam leg with an impressive time of 2:28.21. Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Lai was just one second behind his younger rival.
The Viettel Marathon 2024 is the first race tournament held over three Indochina countries, attracting the participation of representatives of the embassies of Cambodia and Laos and students of the two countries studying in Vietnam.
The Viettel Marathon Series is a bridge to strengthen friendship and relationships of the hosts and regional countries. The last leg will be in Angkor Wat, Cambodia, on December 22. Before the Vietnam leg, around 5,000 runners joined the Viettel Marathon Luang Prabang 2024, which was held in Laos on November 3.
