Hanoi is set to invest in the construction of 16 thematic parks to tackle the growing shortage of green spaces within the city.

According to city officials, the capital faces significant challenges in developing recreational spaces and large-scale parks due to limited funding from both state and social sources, resulting in delays to numerous green space projects.

In response, the municipal government has issued directives to accelerate the planning and implementation of these projects. On February 28, Hanoi People’s Committee issued Document No. 2183/VP-DT, detailing plans for the city’s park system.

Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture has been assigned to guide district-level people’s committees in reviewing existing parks and gardens, as well as preparing detailed plans at a 1:500 scale. The department will also collaborate with Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment to update the list of thematic park projects identified in the city’s overall planning, encouraging investment under current regulations.

Meanwhile, the Hanoi Urban Planning Institute has been tasked with working alongside the National Institute of Urban and Rural Planning to revise zoning plans, transforming designated green spaces into thematic parks as part of the Capital Construction Master Plan to 2045, with a vision to 2065.

On March 21, Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture urged district-level committees to expedite planning for 32 parks and proposed a list of 12 thematic parks to prioritise for investment under socialisation schemes.

Hanoi People’s Committee has approved adjustments to plans for 16 thematic parks, with Bac Tu Liem district emerging as a key focus. Projects in this district include a rest and nursery park in Tay Tuu, Lien Mac, Thuong Cat, and Thuy Phuong wards, as well as a botanical park in Co Nhue 2 and Thuy Phuong wards. The district will also host a cultural and entertainment park combined with an orchard conservation and agricultural tourism site in Minh Khai, Phuc Dien, and Phu Dien wards.

Additionally, a cultural rest park in Minh Khai and Tay Tuu wards, a historical cultural park in Phuc Dien and Minh Khai wards, the Friendship Park in Co Nhue 1 and Xuan Tao wards, and an amusement park in Minh Khai, Phuc Dien, and Phu Dien wards are planned.

In Long Bien District, a cultural, educational, and service park will be developed in Giang Bien Ward. Dan Phuong District will feature two new parks: the Tan Lap-Tan Hoi Park in Tan Hoi and Tan Lap communes, and the Tan Lap-Tay Tuu Park spanning Tan Lap Commune and Tay Tuu Ward in Bac Tu Liem District.

Dong Anh district will see the addition of a green, sports, and public urban park in Tien Duong commune, a green sports zone in Uy No, Xuan Non, and Viet Hung communes, and the Kim Quy Park in Vinh Ngoc and Tien Duong communes.

Gia Lam district’s plans include a multi-functional park incorporating a water reservoir, cultural and sports areas, public services, and new residential zones in Yen Vien and Dinh Xuyen communes. The district will also develop the Phu Dong Historical and Cultural Park in Phu Dong commune and the Trau Quy Urban Functional Park in Trau Quy town.

Efforts to invest in public green spaces gained momentum in October 2023 when Hanoi People’s Council approved the renovation of three major parks: Thong Nhat, Thu Le, and Bach Thao. These renovations have already begun to transform these iconic locations.

Thong Nhat Park, in particular, has seen significant improvements. Enhancements include connecting the park to the pedestrian zone around Tran Nhan Tong street and nearby areas, along with opening four new pedestrian entrances for easier access. These upgrades have improved both the landscape and overall quality of the park, attracting large numbers of visitors seeking leisure and recreation.

As Hanoi continues to expand and urbanise, the development of thematic parks represents a crucial step towards addressing the city’s green space deficit, providing residents with much-needed areas for recreation and relaxation while enhancing the urban environment.
