Vietnam’s Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passes away

Vietnam’s Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passed away on the afternoon of July 19, after holding the paramount leadership position since 2011.

According to the Specialised Council for Protection of Central-level Officials’ Health, General Secretary Trong passed away at Military Central Hospital 108 in Hanoi. He was 80 years old.

The previous evening, a notice from the Politburo stated that following a request of the specialised council, General Secretary Trong had recently been managing his work and taking health treatment at the same time.

He also previously served as President of Vietnam from 2018 to 2021, and Chairman of the National Assembly from 2006 to 2011.

On July 18, the Party and state held a ceremony at the Military Central Hospital 108 to award the Gold Star Order to General Secretary Trong.

The decision to award the order, the highest honour in the country, was made in recognition of the Party, state, and people for his exceptionally outstanding contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.
