Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines will operate four round-trip flights per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays using modern Airbus A321 jets. The new route is set to commence on October 27.

Currently, passengers travelling from Hanoi to Phnom Penh must transit through Vientiane, Laos.

This addition will increase Vietnam Airlines's total routes between Vietnam and Cambodia to five by late October, including four direct routes: Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap, plus one Indochina route. The total number of weekly flights between the two countries will reach 86.

Vietnam Airlines' extensive network in Indochina gives it a competitive edge. The new route is particularly attractive to tourists from Japan, South Korea, and European countries who wish to combine visits to Vietnam and other regional destinations, thanks to high flight frequency and convenient connection times.

Dang Ngoc Hoa, chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines said, "We continue to expand our network, enhance cooperation, improve competitiveness, and service quality to best meet the needs of customers from both countries. The airline will further develop its role as a 'bridge' to promote comprehensive economic, social, and cultural ties, as well as neighbourly cooperation between the two nations."

Hoa emphasised that besides serving as a geographical link for passenger and cargo transit, direct flights act as "ambassadors" to strongly promote bilateral relations, strengthening the friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia.

In addition to the new route announcement, Vietnam Airlines signed an MoU with partners including Cambodia Angkor Air, the Cambodia Tourism Association, and SaigonTourist Group as part of the "Two Countries - One Destination" tourism and aviation promotion programme.

Over the past three decades, Vietnam Airlines has transported nearly 8.2 million passengers and 28,400 tonnes of cargo on more than 81,000 flights between Vietnam and Cambodia.

The Vietnam-Cambodia route was among the first operated by Vietnam Airlines when it was established 31 years ago. Expanding routes to Cambodia, a close neighbouring country, has always been a strategic priority for Vietnam's national carrier.

Cambodia represents a market with significant potential for aviation and tourism. Over 30 years of operations, the total aviation market between the two countries has averaged 450,000 passengers annually, with an average growth rate of 24 per cent per year.

Vietnam ranks second in tourist arrivals to Cambodia, with over one million visitors in 2023. Conversely, more than 400,000 Cambodian tourists visited Vietnam, ranking eighth among international tourist markets to Vietnam.
