Tokio Marine Insurance Vietnam helps Lao Cai to recover from Typhoon Yagi

Typhoon Yagi caused severe damage, significantly impacting the lives and activities of teachers and students across many schools in Lao Cai province, one of the hardest-hit areas in the country in terms of human and material losses. To join hands with the people and the education sector of Lao Cai, Tokio Marine Insurance Vietnam has donated 20 high-capacity water purifiers and contributed to the reconstruction of school facilities in the locality as part of its “Clean Water for Children and School Restoration” initiative.

Recent floods caused by Typhoon Yagi left many schools in Lao Cai facing severe challenges as their water sources have been polluted by landslides. The lack of clean water has disrupted daily activities and caused significant health risks to thousands of kindergarten, primary, and secondary school students at locations ranging from central areas to remote regions. The post-storm terrain disruption has made restoring clean water systems exceedingly difficult.

Tokio Marine Insurance Vietnam has discussed with representatives of Lao Cai Department of Education to understand the situation and propose solutions to support schools in overcoming difficulties through the “Clean Water for Children and School Restoration” venture.

This initiative involves donating 20 high-capacity RO Kangaroo water purifiers to 20 schools in five districts of Bat Xat, Van Ban, Bac Ha, Muong Khuong, and Bao Yen in Lao Cai. This solution contributes to ensuring a safe and clean water supply, helping to minimise health risks, and support recovery after the disaster.

Representatives from Lao Cai Department of Education and Training, along with the principals of 20 schools at the kindergarten, primary, and secondary levels across the province, expressed their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Tokio Marine Vietnam for the project, which has helped teachers and pupils overcome the challenges following the storm.

In addition to delivering water purifiers, TMIV has contributed VND200 million ($7,856) to Nam Pung Preschool in Bat Xat district, Lao Cai – one of the schools severely damaged in terms of infrastructure after the storm, with landslides and flooding causing significant damage to classrooms and functional rooms.

During the donation ceremony in Bat Xat, Nguyen Tho, vice principal of the school, expressed her gratitude for the company’s support and encouragement towards the teachers and students. Tho shared that thanks to the support from TMIV, the school’s management board would be able to conduct the renovation and repair work, including re-laying the floors, repairing the roof, and replacing all doors affected by the storm, ensuring a safe and stable environment for their school children.

On December 13, representatives of TMIV management board and company staff have paid a direct visit to local schools in Bat Xat, Lao Cai to deliver essential life supplies and sweets to the kindergarten and primary school children. In the spirit of sharing and caring contribution from company members, TMIV hopes that the small gifts will contribute to bringing warm moments to the school teachers and pupils, encouraging them to overcome hardship in life.
