The biggest clean water plant in North Vietnam with an area of 65 hectares, the facility is located in Phu Dong commune of the suburban district of Gia Lam. The first phase has a total investment capital of VND5 trillion ($217.39 million) and was constructed in two stages, with the first one finished in October 2018 (capacity of 150,000 cubic metres a day), and the second on September 5, supplying about one-third of the water demand of Hanoi and several areas in Bac Ninh and Hung Yen provinces.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, said that, “Beginning the operation of the second part of the first phase of the Duong River Surface Water Treatment Plant affirms the policy of the government and Hanoi to attract private investment in projects serving the growing local demand for clean water. It is also evidence of the city’s commitment to investment attraction targeting capable investors and creating the most favourable conditions during development.”
The ceremony also attracted the participation of Nguyen Dinh Toan, Deputy Minister of Construction; Ambassadors to Vietnam and diplomatic representatives of Austria, Belarus, Oman, and Thailand, as well as representatives from Vietnamese ministries and agencies.
Do Thi Kim Lien, chairman of Duong River Surface Water Plant JSC, said, “The plant brings us closer to our dream of supplying clean water to all thirsty areas in Hanoi and neighbouring areas. With experience, strong expertise, and advanced technology, we are ready for the next stages."
With the operation of the second part of the first phase, the plant continues to supply clean water to other inner districts and outlying ones of Hanoi such as Ung Hoa, Thanh Oai, Thuong Tin, Phu Xuyen, Dong Anh, Soc Son, and for mega residential areas under construction such as VinCity Gia Lam in Gia Lam district, and the Thanh Ha Urban Area in Hadong district and other projects in the pipeline such as the smart urban area of BRG Group, the National Exhibition Centre, and Co Loa Urban Area. Other beneficiaries include areas in Hung Yen and Bac Ninh.
Equipped with advanced and environmentally friendly equipment, Duong River Surface Water Treatment Plant is part of Hanoi’s clean water supply planning by 2030, with a vision towards 2050 approved by the prime minister in March 2013 and by Hanoi authorities in June 2016. The project will be developed and expanded by 2022, reaching a capacity of 900,000cu.m per day.
