The central city of Hue has started construction on a pedestrian street along the Huong River which will be panelled with a kind of a rare and valuable wood in Vietnam.

According to People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Thanh, the street on the southern bank of the river would be 380 metres long and 4 metres wide.

The street will be supported by concrete pillars planted in the riverbed and its surface will use a rare and valuable Lim (Erythrophleum fordii) wood. The hand-rail will be also set up on the street.

Thanh added that initially, the road construction was scheduled to start in July 2016 and finish in April this year. However, the delay of the breaking-ground ceremony was delayed after that, so the construction was slated for completion by the end of 2018.

"Using Lim wood for the street surface is expected to offer something new on the banks of the Huong River,” Thanh said.

The street is part of a Huong River planning project which covers a total area of nearly 840 hectares, of which 313 hectares are along the river banks, while the rest is water surface.

The project which gets USD6 million in funding from Korea International Co-operation Agency will include an outdoor stage, commercial buildings and sightseeing spots.
