The Ministry of Information and Communications on October 7 held a meeting to review the 9-month performance of the ICT sector and set tasks for the remainder of the year, with digital transformation in focus.

The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) held a nine-month review meeting on October 7

According to the MIC, the third quarter and the 9-month span demonstrated the advantages and challenges in the country and the world, especially the impacts of COVID-19.

In the post industry, third-quarter revenue was estimated at VND5 trillion ($217.4 million) while the volume of postal output hit 158 million, resulting in a total volume of 790 million in the first nine months.

In telecommunications, total telecommunications service revenues reached VND86.83 trillion ($3.78 billion) as the number of smartphone mobile subscribers hit 90.3 million.

In the field of IT applications, between January and September, 52 built and updated e-government architecture version 2.0; 53 cities and provinces built IT application plans in 2021-2025; and 40 cities and provinces built and issued the digital transformation programme.

Meanwhile, the revenue of information security businesses in the first nine months was VND1.4 trillion ($60.86 million).

Total ICT revenue was estimated at around $97.8 billion. The export value of computer and spare parts was estimated at $36.8 billion and the export value of mobile phones and spare parts was estimated at $41.1 billion.

During the period, the MIC built and issued an instruction on the development and safe use of digital platforms, as well as other regulations and action programmes on information security.

The MIC also directed the research and production of 5G equipment; deployed 12 Micro 8T8R stations; and piloted a Macro 8T8R station with ORAN technology. The ministry has built a draft national strategy on the development of Vietnamese digital technology businesses by 2030, working on drafting of a law on digital technology industry, and some others.

Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Anh Tuan said that the country is entering the new normal, and is striving to make breakthroughs in the remaining months with an expectation to obtain economic growth of over 7 per cent so as to enable the country to achieve an economic growth of 3-3.5 per cent in 2021.

He asked units to focus on the completion of programmes, schemes and legal framework in the fourth quarter in line with the schedule, while efficiently disbursing public investment and accelerating digital transformation.
