Vietnam has a high potential for renewable energy

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the total installed capacity of power sources in the country would reach 69,342MW by the end of 2020. In particular, wind and solar power plants account for roughly 25 per cent of installed capacity (more than 17,000MW). Thousands of MW of wind power projects were also put into commercial operation after October 31, 2021, greatly expanding wind power in the country's energy mix.

With the private sector investing in the majority of projects, their participation is essential for the development of renewable energy in Vietnam. Trungnam Group is the company with the largest renewable energy project portfolio in Vietnam. It possessed 1,500 MW of renewable energy projects as of October 31, 2021, with seven projects invested in and operational. They are Ea Nam wind power (400MW), Phuoc Huu wind power (46.2MW), Tra Vinh wind power (100MW), Thuan Bac wind power (151.9MW), Thuan Bac solar power (204MW), Thuan Nam solar power (450MW), and Tra Vinh solar power (140MW) projects.

With the private sector investing in the majority of projects, their participation is essential for the development of renewable energy in Vietnam.

Including its three hydroelectric plants – Dong Nai 2 (70MW), Krong No 2 (30MW), and Krong No 3 (18MW) – Trungnam Group contributes 1,600MW to the country's electricity capacity.

Trungnnam Group manages and operates three significant projects in Ninh Thuan, including a wind and solar power complex, Trungnam Thuan Bac solar power plant, and Phuoc Huu wind power project.

Despite COVID-19, the group has constructed three large wind power projects with a combined capacity of 546.2MW in Dak Lak, Tra Vinh, and Ninh Thuan by the end of October, with Ea Nam Wind Power Project (Dak Lak) becoming the largest onshore wind power plant project in Vietnam today, with a capacity of 400MW, and Dong Hai 1 Tra Vinh becoming the largest offshore wind power project in Vietnam, with a total of 100MW. Wind Power Plant No.5 - Ninh Thuan contributes 46.2MW, raising the total capacity of renewable energy plants in Ninh Thuan to 852.1MW.

Trungnam Group is one of the enterprises that are instrumental in turning Ninh Thuan into the country's renewable energy centre.

“Trungnam Group has one of the largest energy generation capacities in Vietnam,” said Nguyen Tam Tien, CEO of Trungnam Group. “Trungnnam Group's projects are always efficient since we focus on utilising renewable energy sources in strategic areas, thereby boosting economic development and contributing to the common objective of maintaining energy security. Trungnnam Group will continue to effectively implement renewable energy projects to support the country's socio-economic development."

Vietnam has a high potential for renewable energy and this industry is becoming critical. Furthermore, given the numerous objections to coal power projects, Vietnam should enhance investment in greener thermal projects, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) while increasing renewables in its energy mix.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade in the draft Power Development Plan 8 significantly raised the proportion LNG in total output. As a result, by 2025, the capacity of gas thermal power (including LNG) will be 14,117MW, accounting for 13.4-13.7 per cent of total capacity, and 27,471-32,271MW by 2030 (21.1-22.4 per cent).

Gas thermal power capacity will continue to grow, accounting for 23.5-26.9 per cent of total capacity by 2045.

Many plans are focused on LNG investment, according to Tien from Trungnam Group.

“During implementation, we are continually upgrading the latest global technology to bolster efficiency. As a leading energy company, we are well aware of our responsibility to assist the government in realising its carbon reduction target. That is why Trungnam Group is now studying and constructing LNG projects in potential locations,” said Tien.

At the same time, the group is actively working with partners to develop modern energy storage systems and methods to efficiently manage energy resources to optimise the value and direction for future energy exports.

“The development of LNG power in diverse localities is a new step swhoing Trungnnam Group's passion to generate safe and sustainable energy. We will be accompanying the government and other stakeholder economies around the world to enrich environmentally friendly energy sources,” said Trungnam's leader.
