The event is part of Hanoi's 2024 investment, trade, and tourism promotion programme, organised by Hanoi Promotion Agency on Investment, Trade, and Tourism, and Long Bien People's Committee.

It aims to showcase agricultural products, One Commune One Product (OCOP) items, and typical agricultural and rural products of Hanoi and other localities. It also aims to find the consumption market, stimulate the development of agricultural and rural production, and connect producers with distribution channels in Hanoi.

This is an important agricultural trade promotion event that has been held annually since 2022. Taking place at the year-end, the programme is expected to attract the attention of many citizens and tourists to visit and shop.

It is a good opportunity for agricultural production and trading units to display and sell their products as well as introduce the potential and strength of each locality, promoting Vietnamese agricultural produce to domestic and international markets.

More than 120 booths are available at the event. About 150 businesses, cooperatives, and OCOP enterprises showcase their products from 32 localities such as Hanoi, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Cao Bang, Hung Yen, Ha Giang, Bac Ninh, and Danang.

Over 1,500 products are being displayed, including typical agricultural and OCOP products, regional specialities, green and high-tech agricultural products, and others.

Typical specialties such as ancient Shan Tuyet tea from Ha Giang, Dien grapefruit from Hung Yen, traditional Phu Quoc fish sauce, or Thai Nguyen tea are displayed in an attractive and creative space. These products not only reflect the cultural diversity of the region but also demonstrate the ample potential of Vietnam's agricultural sector.

At the event, the Cooperative Union of Hanoi also hosts the Weekend Market with 20 booths of OCOP items, agricultural products, and traditional craft villages of Hanoi. Hoa Binh province boasts 30 booths to promote OCOP items and agricultural products. These booths are expected to enrich the shopping experience for visitors.

In addition to the exhibition and fair, there are other sideline activities during the four days, such as promotional programmes, on-site product processing, and product trials, along with cultural exchanges and art performances.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Bui Duy Quang, deputy director of the Hanoi Promotion Agency, said the programme, which starts in 2022, aims to connect the distribution of agricultural and OCOP products from Hanoi and surrounding provinces with consumers in the capital, while also bringing producers together with distribution channels in the city.

“This initiative contributes to stimulating the development of agricultural production and rural areas,” he added.

In the same vein, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, director of Hoa Binh province’s Centre for Investment, Trade, and Tourism Promotion, underscored the programme’s role in fostering collaboration, enhancing trade connections, and introducing agricultural products, OCOP items, and specialties from Hoa Binh to Hanoi residents and visitors. She noted that the event adds a vibrant touch to the 2024 year-end shopping season while effectively supporting the "Vietnamese people prioritise Vietnamese goods" campaign.

Nguyen Xuan Thanh, director of Van Long International Import-Export Investment Company Limited, shared that the company brought to the programme many specialties of Ha Giang, including ancient Shan Tuyet tea in line with the 4-star OCOP criteria. This is an opportunity for the company to introduce Shan Tuyet tea products to consumers in the capital city while gaining access to modern retail systems.

"We really hope to have more agricultural programmes for businesses in Ha Giang province to promote specialty products to the Hanoi market," Thanh added.

Echoing this view, Nguyen Thi Lua, director of Global Multi-Business Solution Development Application Joint Stock Company, said that the company currently manages the GBAMart e-commerce site. Through this programme, the company has more opportunities to bring clean agricultural products and OCOP products to e-commerce sites for consumption.

Currently, e-commerce is accounting for an increasingly large proportion of agricultural product consumption. According to a report by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, online retail sales in Vietnam grew by more than 20 per cent in 2023. Among them, agricultural products are one of the leading product groups in terms of consumption. By taking advantage of digital technology, it not only helps reduce intermediary costs but also opens up new markets, especially in urban and international areas.

Vietnam currently has more than 10,000 OCOP products, many of which have met international standards and exported to demanding markets such as Japan, Europe, and the US. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2023, the agricultural sector contributed about 14.85 per cent to the national GDP, with agricultural export turnover reaching nearly $54 billion. Key products such as rice, coffee, cashew nuts, and tropical fruits are increasingly securing their position in the global market.
