Japan's Marubeni Corporation became an investor in aluminium-recycling firm Nguyet Minh 2 Trading-Services-Environment JSC (NM2) on February 7.

Vietnam is the number one consumer of beverage cans in Southeast Asia, and the amount of aluminium scrap generated is expected to increase in the future due to the expansion of middle-income demographics.

In addition, due to the recent increase in environmental awareness, the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy has been implemented in Vietnam, with the country hoping to realise a resource-circulating economy.

NM2 is an EPR-certified recycler that melts a wide variety of aluminium scrap, mainly beverage cans, to produce recycled aluminium ingots.

These ingots are a valuable resource and emit only 3 per cent of the greenhouse gases during production compared to new aluminium ingots, and demand is increasing rapidly.

In its mid-term management strategy, Marubeni has positioned a green strategy as one of its basic policies for enhancing corporate value, and classifies the aluminium business, which is essential for the transition to a decarbonised society, as a green business.

By expanding NM2’s business through this investment, Marubeni aims to ensure a stable medium- to long-term supply of recycled aluminium ingots with low environmental impact, and contribute to a sustainable society in Vietnam.
