Indonesia will stop exporting copper concentrates in 2024 when two major domestic copper companies finish building their smelters and begin processing the raw material locally, Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo said on June 20.

Jakarta - Indonesia will stop exporting copper concentrates in 2024 when two major domestic copper companies finish building their smelters and begin processing the raw material locally, Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo said on June 20.

Freeport Indonesia and Amman Mineral are expected to put into operational their new smelters in next May. Indonesia last week recommended both companies to continue their exports until then.

Copper, in addition to nickel, is one of the raw materials crucial for the energy transition process, and Indonesia mines both of them in massive quantities.

The Southeast Asian nation, which has been looking to develop nickel processing industries and ultimately produce batteries for EV manufacturers, is eager to attract foreign companies for those ventures.

Indonesia plans to build various national data centres

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics of Indonesia is aiming to complete and inaugurate a national data centre in Bekasi district, West Java province, by October 2024.
