At a press conference on February 21, Vu A Bang, Deputy Chairman of Dien Bien People's Committee, said that Dien Bien is the only province in the northwest region with flights connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, giving it the potential to develop tourism.

“During the Dien Bien culture and tourism week that took place in Ho Chi Minh City last year, we saw that tourists from the southeast and southwest were interested in exploring Dien Bien's culture and tourism. This is an opportunity to build sound stimulus policies, invest in infrastructure, and upgrade services to attract more tourists to the province," Bang shared.

According to the vice chairman, 2023 was a breakthrough year for the local tourism industry with 1.1 million visitors, surpassing the target of 900,000 set at the beginning of the year, including 7,500 international arrivals.

In 2024, Dien Bien aims to welcome about 1.3 million tourists, raising total tourism revenue to $92.8 million.

National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024 is a national cultural - economic - social event, associated with the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024).

The organisation of the National Tourism Year is expected to provide an important boost to the economy and tourism in Dien Bien province, creating conditions to pull in resources in investment, development, and construction of new and attractive products, while creating momentum for the province's socioeconomic development in 2024 and the following years.

Within the framework of the National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024, 169 events will take place, including 13 hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

The highlight will be the opening ceremony associated with the 2024 Hoa Ban Festival on March 16.

An arts and high-altitude fireworks display will also take place on the evening of May 6.

Dien Bien province is located in the northwest of Vietnam covering 9,562.9 square kilometres and bordering China, and Laos.

Dien Bien currently has 33 ranked historical relics, including one special national historical relic at Dien Bien Phu Battlefield, 14 national relics, 18 provincial relics, and 18 national intangible cultural heritages. The Thai Xoe Art and Then Practice of the Tay, Nung, and Thai people are registered by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritages of humanity.

Dien Bien is blessed by nature, friendly people, and diverse cultural identity. According to the orientation for the 2025-2030 period, Dien Bien will develop tourism based on historical - spiritual tourism, natural landscapes and cultural identities, resort tourism, entertainment, and healthcare.
