In a meeting with the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) last week, a representative from Cedona Group - the advisor to ADC-HAS Airports - said the investor would like to invest into Chu Lai, Phu Bai, Danang, Tuy Hoa, Quy Nhon, Pleiku and Cam Ranh airports.

The investment proposal was made after ADC-HAS Airports and its advisor Cedona Group spent nearly one year studying the local aviation market’s potential. ADC-HAS initially proposed to invest in  Chu Lai and Long Thanh  airports during its first visit to Vietnam last year.

“We visited Vietnam three times last year to study the aviation market and its potential. Vietnam wants to improve its aviation infrastructure, that is an investment opportunity,” said the representative.
The airports are considered gateways to boost central region tourism and economic development.
Among the airports, Chu Lai international airport in central Quang Nam province will be developed as the largest air cargo hub in South East Asia. The airport will have a total capacity of 2.2 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of air cargo per year by 2015. By 2025, Chu Lai airport will handle 4.1 million passengers and five million tonnes of air cargo.

The government also plans to develop Danang and Phu Bai airports in Thua Thien-Hue as international ones. The representative of Cedona Group said the investor would send investment plans to the MPI and Ministry of Transport, but declined to release any further details.

ADC-HAS Airports is a consortium between HAS Development Corporation, the development affiliate of the Houston Airport System, Airport Development Corporation of Canada and Omers Strategic Investments. The group has been developing and operating Quito airport in Ecuador, San Jose airport and Liberia airport in Costa Rica.

ADC-HAS Airports is not the only foreign company having expressed interest in investing in airports in Vietnam. Another US airport investor, Airis Holdings, also plans to invest into Danang airport and Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport under the public-private partnership form.

Korean Joinus Company Ltd also wants to invest into an airport in northern Quang Ninh province.
