On May 24, Vietnam's State President Vo Van Thuong had a meeting with Portuguese ambassador to Southeast Asia Joao Weistein and honorary consul general of Portugal to Vietnam Tran Kim Chung.

President Thuong expressed delight that the two-way trade turnover had increased by more than 10 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to 2022.
The president proposed that the two countries continue to push forward and enhance their cooperation on tourism, cultural exchange, and human interaction, with an emphasis on developing twinning partnerships between cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Porto.

The Portuguese ambassador promised to work hard to expand Portuguese-Vietnamese collaboration on renewable energy, medicines, IT, the maritime economy, and education and training.
Chung said that the two sides discussed the inauguration of the Vietnamese Embassy in Portugal and the Portuguese Embassy in Vietnam, which would contribute to the historic and cordial relationship between Vietnam and Portugal reaching a new level of growth.
Vietnam and Portugal have had diplomatic connections for almost 500 years, and it was the Portuguese who contributed to the creation of the Vietnamese script that is used today.
The chart created by a Portuguese explorer in 1525 provided a crucial foundation for establishing Vietnam's sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and Paracel Islands.
Portugal adopted the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement in April, helping to promote bilateral trade and investment cooperation.
Vietnam-Portugal ties have advanced significantly in recent years. The two sides have strengthened regular exchanges and contacts at all, including the highest, levels, and have continued to closely collaborate and support each other in multilateral and international forums such as the United Nations and cooperation frameworks such as the ASEAN-EU Summit, the Asia-Europe Meeting, and others.
