Specifically, Van Don International Airport has won the World's Leading New Airport 2019a award over seven competitors, including Louis Armstrong New Orleans (US), Carlisle Lake District (UK), Corvera Airport Murcia (Spain), Eilat Ramon (Israel), Pakyong (India), Seletar (Singapore), and Yogyakarta Adisucipto (Indonesia).
The award for the World's Leading New Airport was handed last year to Muscat International Airport (Oman). This category spans across the strict evaluation criteria on design, service quality, and passengers' satisfaction, especially passengers' experiences via new technology.

Van Don International Airport has completely met all of these criteria to win this category. The airport's design, which was inspired by the beauty of the world natural heritage Ha Long Bay, is deeply impressive for its local cultural feature, including the bright orange-red dome that resemblesfully stacked sails. The architecture makes use of diverse materials such as wood, steel, glass, stone, water, as well as indigenous plants and trees in a flexible way in all exterior and interior details, creating a close space in harmony with nature.

Pham Ngoc Sau, CEO of Van Don, said that the prize enables Van Don to appear on the world aviation map, and confirmed the development of Vietnam's aviation industry. "This is also the pride and motivation for us to continue to further improve the quality of service and supply the best experience to customers," Sau said.
According to the latest information, as of November 22, as many as 1,796 flights have departed and arrived from Van Don, including 117 international flights. The total number of passengers reached 235,000, including 10,000 international arrivals. In addition to available routes between Van Don and Tham Quyen, Ho Nam, Shanghai (China), and Seoul (South Korea), other international ones to Hainan, Nam Ninh, Guangzhou (China), Japan, Bangkok (Thailand), and domestic ones to Phu Quoc will soon be opened.

Operating for a single year so far, Van Don has been named by multiple reputable international awards. This is a special point of pride for not only this airport but also for Vietnam's aviation industry. Last October, Van Don won the Asian Leading New Airport at the World Travel Awards in Asia & Oceania 2019 in Phu Quoc.
Van Don International Airport (Quang Ninh province), which is the first international airport developed by a Vietnamese private conglomerate and was finished after two years of construction, was invested VND7.463 trillion ($324.48 million).
Besides Van Dong International Airport, numerous resorts and hotels of Sun Group have been honoured at the WTA, including Sun World Fansipan Legend, Hotel De La Coupole – M'Gallery (in Sapa),the cable car system in Sun World Ba Na Hills, and InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort.
