According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNTA), international tourist arrivals hit 1.42 million in October, up almost 28 per cent on-year. The total number of international visitors to Vietnam in the first 10 months of 2024 exceeded 14 million, a more than 41 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

The tourism sector had set a target of welcoming 17-18 million international tourists in 2024, a goal Nguyen Le Phuc, deputy director of the VNTA, considers entirely achievable.

This success has been a result of efforts to relax visa policies, promote the country's image, and improve service quality. "We expect international arrivals to Vietnam to continue growing dramatically in the remaining months of 2024, and the tourism sector will achieve its target of welcoming 17-18 million international visitors this year," Phuc said.

According to kinhtedothi.vn, Dang Huong Giang, director of Hanoi Tourism Department, said, "Autumn-winter is the capital's tourism golden season, so Hanoi will accelerate product development and promotion activities to achieve its goal of welcoming 5 million international visitors in 2024."

Quang Ninh province is promoting cruise tourism, welcoming luxury tourists with high spending capacity. From now until year-end, cruise ships are expected to bring 2,000-3,500 international visitors for sightseeing and leisure in Halong, Quang Ninh province, with stays ranging from half a day to one day.

From the business perspective, Thuy Tran, general director of Vivu Journeys Vietnam, said, "Many international tourists are increasingly interested in sustainable tourism activities, seeking experiences connected with nature and environmental protection. To meet this demand, Vivu has launched ecotourism tours in Phong Nha-Ke Bang and community-based educational tourism tours."

Nguyen Ngoc Hoai Nguyen, general director of BenThanh Tourist, has developed packages for two specific customer segments. "For international leisure tourists, we offer very competitively priced packages; for meetings and events, we also have suitable products ready to welcome guests," Nguyen shared.

Airlines are also making efforts to open more international routes. Vietravel Airlines has boosted flight frequencies and expanded routes to Taiwan, including Phu Quoc-Taipei, Hue-Taichung, and Danang-Taichung.

To support tourism businesses tapping into the Chinese market, Vietnam Airlines has opened a direct route between Hanoi and Chengdu, linking the capital with Sichuan Province. Similarly, Vietjet has introduced two routes connecting Phu Quoc with Taichung and Kaohsiung in Taiwan.

To attract more international visitors to Vietnam, Dinh Thi Thuy Phuong, head of the Trade and Service Statistics Department, suggested the tourism sector strengthen promotion activities, seek new markets rather than focusing on traditional ones, while applying new technologies, such as AI, to promote a digital transformation in the tourism industry.

Focus should also be placed on diversifying and improving tourism products and tours, especially those based on traditional cultural values, encouraging tourist spending, extending international visitors' length of stay, and increasing tourism revenue. Sustainable tourism development should be linked with environmental protection, natural landscape preservation, and traditional cultural value conservation.
