Raising children's steps to school

This is the first scholarship award in the journey of "Connecting with love - Raising Steps to School" to grant 800 scholarships to students who are strong-willed to overcome difficulties in the four provinces of Hau Giang, Binh Duong, Quang Nam, and Ha Nam. The event marks the 30th anniversary of Tan Hiep Phat and the 11th anniversary of Number One Factory in Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province.

From early morning, 200 students along with their parents and teachers were present at the Party Committee of Hau Giang province to receive scholarships.

Thi Diep (49 years old), a Khmer ethnic minority resident of Hau Giang, said that she and her husband have five children. The youngest child is in grade 1, the other four have dropped out of school because the family is too poor.

"My husband and I do manual jobs to make a living. We only earn $7.91 a day to feed our children. I only wish I had enough money to buy clothes for my five children," Diep said.

"I'm very happy that my child has earned the scholarship, which is equal to a few days wages. This morning, I borrowed money to buy a new set of clothes for my child to receive the scholarship."

Sharing the same joy, Pham Thi Son (62 years old), residing in Hoa Tien commune, brought her grandson, who is in grade 6, to receive the scholarship. Son said that they left home in the early morning because of the long distance.

She shared that she took care of her grandson because his mother left him when he was a child. His father earned $7.91 per day from fieldwork to feed him.

“I was very happy when my grandson received the scholarship. Thanks to the support of teachers and donors, he can go to school. Although life is hard, I will try my best to help him pursue education and have a brighter future,” she said.

In the same vein, Truong Quoc Hanh (58 years old), brought his grandchild, who is in grade 8. He said, "It's been a long time since I left home and came to to such a big venue. I was both happy and nervous when I received a large amount of money. I would like to express my gratitude to the programme and the benefactors for loving and sharing with my grandchild to have more joy to go to school."

Hanh said that as a bricklayer, he earns about $9.88 a day to support his three grandchildren, whose parents broke up a long time ago.

Nguyen Chi Nghieu, chairman of the Red Cross Society of Hau Giang province, said that he was very touched by students from poor families who are making an effort to overcome difficult circumstances to achieve high academic results. They represent the dynamic and energetic young generation of the country.

"This is the second year that students in Hau Giang have received the support of Tan Hiep Phat. We would like to thank the board of directors and all of the employees for sponsoring 350 scholarships worth over $19,000 over the past two years. These are very practical and meaningful scholarships, covering part of the education costs and giving students more confidence and motivation to go to school," he added.

With the motto "Give the best things to children", during the Mid-Autumn Festival Tan Hiep Phat donated more than 50,000 mooncakes with a total value of more than $35,000 to children and students across localities from Ca Mau to Lang Son, especially children in regions affected by storms and floods.

"For Tan Hiep Phat, taking care of children is not a charitable activity but a responsibility to the community in general and children in particular. The obligation to serve society is the core value that we have pursued since our establishment," Vu shared.
