Science and Technology Day puts innovation centre stage

The event attracted the participation of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, representatives of several ministries and agencies, and international organisations, as well as hundreds of domestic and foreign scientists and technology experts.

In his opening remarks, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung revealed that Vietnam has the right conditions for scientists to dream big and solve the country's problems.

"Science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation are the driving forces of our future economic development and the current national mission. The MoST is planning major changes in several areas, its organisational structure, funding systems, management strategies, and how it measures success, to make sure that knowledge and innovation can effectively drive economic growth," said Hung.

Making an address later that day, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung said, "The government has identified science and technology, innovation and digital transformation as the shortest path to success. These are vital factors for Vietnam to realise its aspiration for rapid, sustainable, inclusive and self-reliant development to successfully achieve its goals."

Dung called on ministries, agencies, local governments, and the expert community to work together on implementing breakthrough projects and solutions. This includes continuously refining institutions, establishing a clear and transparent legal framework to unlock the potential of science, technology, and innovation, and building a comprehensive national innovation ecosystem.

At the event, the MoST also announced a new initiative for the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development, a restructured funding institution to improve management efficiency, reduce administrative procedures, and create advantagious conditions for scientific organisations and individuals to complete their work.

Also at the event, 10 leading groups from research institutes, universities, businesses, and the inventor community came together with a pledge to implement strategic scientific and technological initiatives. Their efforts will focus on key areas such as the research and production of cancer treatment drugs based on genetic mechanisms, the development of AI chips for smart edge devices, the design of machinery for circular agriculture, and the production of Vietnamese language AI software to be made here in Vietnam.
