The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) held a workshop on August 7 to educate its reporters and civil servants on human rights laws and policies.

Addressing the event, Ho Hong Hai, deputy head of the Department of Justice under the MIC, spoke of how human rights has always been a key issue.

"The Party has issued many new policies to strengthen propaganda and education of officials, members and the people so that everyone can be more deeply aware of the Party’s views, state policies, and laws on human rights," he said.

In addition, Vietnam's Constitution and legal documents clearly and specifically stipulate human rights in all areas of life such as civil, political, economic, and social rights

The conference aimed to help raise awareness and understanding of human rights; the achievements of human rights during the reform period in Vietnam; identify and fight against distorted arguments over human rights, and promote the role of media and journalism concerning human rights in Vietnam today.

Dr. Tuong Duy Kien from Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics said, "After 35 years of reform, Vietnam has made many important achievements in promoting and protecting human rights not only for the Vietnamese people, but also contributing to the protection of human rights in the ASEAN region. However, many hostile, reactionary forces at home and abroad, and some international non-governmental organisations which lack information, deliberately spread documents that distort, slander, deny achievements, and try to sabotage the socialist regime."

He added, “Currently, hostile forces use mass media, especially the internet, publication of newspapers abroad, production of videotapes and discs and send to Vietnam; and sponsor a number of foreign press agencies to sabotage Vietnam to distort and provoke ideology and politics. Therefore, the mainstream media and press in Vietnam need to be proactive in propagating human rights.”

According to Kien, the media and press need to further promote their role in orienting public opinion, propagating achievements in protecting and ensuring human rights and civil rights, while proactively participating in fighting critical theory of wrong and distorted views of reactionary and hostile forces, protecting the views, guidelines and policies of the Party and the state on human rights and civil rights in Vietnam today.

The workshop is part of the scheme on communications on human rights in Vietnam approved in 2022 which sets the goal of creating changes in the entire society's awareness and understanding of human rights, helping the locals, compatriots abroad and international friends clearly understand the views, policies, efforts and results achieved in the work of protecting and promoting human rights in Vietnam.
