VIR awards scholarships to paediatric patients at the Institute of Hematology |
On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of Vietnam Study Promotion Day (October 2, 2023), with the spirit of encouraging people from all walks of life and social organisations to participate in studying, Vietnam Investment Review’s Youth Union visited and gave gifts to sick children in difficult circumstances undergoing long-term treatment at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.
The 20 scholarships worth VND1 million ($42) each were allocated from VIR's Swing for the Kids scholarship fund, funded by the charity golf tournament.
The majority of paediatric patients are either undergoing chemotherapy or relapsing treatment and using drugs, which are not paid for by health insurance.
Baby Le Bao Tram (born in 2021) was treated for leukemia in 2022, and is receiving relapsed treatment and taking additional medications outside the health insurance payment. Many other paediatric patients have been treated for leukemia for more than two years, including who come from poor local households, agricultural families, or ethnic minorities living in difficult mountainous areas.
Along with scholarships, nearly 120 books, newspapers, and comic books donated by VIR staff’s children were given to the library of the Department of Children's Hematological Diseases. With the desire to encourage unlucky children who have to spend most of their time on hospital beds, dozens of messages from the children of VIR staff were also sent to paediatric patients.
The gifts given to paediatric patients are not large in material value but carry warm feelings, and partly support treatment costs, as well as bring encouragement and morale.

Not only being the leading unit in the country in promoting voluntary blood donation, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion is also a top treatment facility for blood diseases.
The Department of Children's Blood Diseases currently accepts paediatric patients treated for leukaemia, haemophilia, and thalassemia.
The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion had an initial scale of 300 beds, currently registered to increase to 800 beds, but regularly receives more than a thousand patients. The library for paediatric patients, which has been in operation since 2014, is also being used for outpatient treatment during most hours.
