Ten years after Nguyen Thi Luu Ly received a scholarship for the first time, and upon graduating with a master’s degree in China in August, Ly decided to return to her hometown in Lao Cai province to apply for a job. “With the location of a province adjacent to China, where highly qualified human resources are prioritised and welcomed, I believe my choice is correct,” Ly said.
She believes the scholarships for poor students, especially those living in remote areas, are deeply meaningful. So, in addition to her main job, she regularly participates in activities such as donating to poor children and volunteering in the locality. “I participated in a group to support people in the communes of Bac Ha district who were heavily affected by Typhoon Yagi. My family’s house also provided free accommodation for volunteer groups to go to Bac Ha to help,” Ly said.

Nguyen Thi Doan from Lao Cai also has memorable memories, having received a scholarship from the charity tournament because of her strong academic performance in eighth grade several years ago.
“Also in that year, I was lucky enough to visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi and his hometown in Nghe An on a pilgrimage organised by VIR. The scholarship and that trip were a source of encouragement and motivation for me to strive for more high achievements in my studies,” she said.
“Currently, I am very sympathetic and always help those in difficulty. My mother is a member of the Red Cross Society of Bac Ha district in Lao Cai province, so I also inherited this from her. While I may not be able to help much in terms of material things, I can help motivate the community with spirit, belief, and practical action,” Doan added.
Since its inception in 2007, the Swing for the Kids charity golf tournament has become a familiar rendezvous for golf-loving businesspeople with compassionate hearts who want to support disadvantaged students.
Le Khac Hiep, vice chairman of Vingroup said, “Social charity is one of Vingroup’s focus areas. Every year, the Thien Tam Foundation earmarks a large amount of money for social activities.”
Vingroup and its Thien Tam Foundation have engaged as a platinum sponsor for the event since the first days of its inception. Members have also travelled to remote areas and islands to grant scholarships to students in disadvantaged circumstances.
In the same vein, Tran Kim Nga, CEO of Vietnam Beverage Co., Ltd., said, “When we engage in charitable activities and participate in this tournament, we hope to provide better opportunities for children. Our chairman has stressed the importance of sharing the benefits we enjoy with the community in which we operate.”
Le Trong Minh, VIR’s editor-in-chief and head of the tournament’s organising board said that during the past 17 years, from economic crisis and raging pandemic to more peaceful times, the business community and those with compassionate hearts have stood with VIR as it puts together this charity tournament.
“We believe that the fund will continue to complete its mission as a bridge between kind hearts and poor students. The scholarship offers meaningful encouragement to help alleviate hardships for poor students and to foster their ambitions,” Minh said.
Over 17 years, the event has successfully raised over $875,000, with the funds utilised to provide more than 20,000 scholarships to underprivileged students, enabling them to surmount obstacles and pursue their educational endeavours.
Additionally, contributions have been directed towards the enhancement and refurbishment of educational facilities in 40 cities and provinces nationwide, improving the learning environment for countless students.
