For the past 17 years, VIR has awarded a series of scholarships to disadvantaged children through its Swing for the Kids charity golf tournament.

Nguyen Thi Doan from Ha Giang, who received multiple scholarships from the tournament, has now graduated from the Academy of Journalism and Communication and works in digital marketing in Hanoi.

Recalling the first time she received a scholarship, Doan said, "In eighth grade, I received a scholarship from the tournament due to my good academic performance. That same year, I was fortunate to visit Uncle Ho's Mausoleum in Hanoi and his hometown in Nghe An during a pilgrimage organised by the newspaper. The scholarship and that trip were a source of encouragement for me to achieve more academic accomplishments."

With a passion for learning, Doan aspired to attend university. However, given her family's difficult circumstances, covering both education and living expenses in the city was a major concern. Nevertheless, with persistence, diligence, and outstanding academic performance, Doan once again received support from the Swing for the Kids scholarship, providing her with the resources to fulfil her aspirations.

"The scholarship was a significant material gift for me at that time because it helped alleviate my financial worries, making life as a student more manageable. The scholarship also instilled in me greater determination and effort throughout my four years of university and beyond," she said.

Nguyen Thi Luu Ly, who received the Swing for the Kids scholarship in 2014, also demonstrated her abilities, passion, and persistent efforts in her educational journey. Hailing from Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province, a challenging area in the northern mountainous region with limited educational opportunities and experiences.

"The scholarship made me feel that my efforts were recognised and served as motivation for me to continue striving and to overcome my immediate challenges," she said.

With a passion for languages and persistent efforts, Ly graduated with a bachelor's degree in English Language from the Academy of Finance and completed a master's in International Chinese Language Education at Hebei University in China. Ly said she will return to Lao Cai to become a teacher, applying the knowledge she has acquired in practice.

Also from Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province, Phung Thi Viet Ha received a scholarship from Swing for the Kids in 2014 and has now graduated from the University of Labour and Social Affairs. Ha said that the opportunities from the Swing for the Kids scholarship opened up many possibilities for her.

Phung Thi Viet Ha says her greatest aspiration is to help disadvantaged people

"Thanks to receiving this scholarship, I have learned a great deal, gained more knowledge, broadened my perspective, and visited places I never thought I would. I had the chance to go to the Dong Loc T-junction and Uncle Ho's house. After returning to my hometown, VIR continued to support me greatly in my studies," Ha said.

"When I was in my third year of university in Hanoi, I was fortunate to attend the Swing for the Kids golf tournament at Legend Hill Golf course in Dong Anh, Hanoi. I was determined to study hard and eventually passed the entrance exam to the University of Labour and Social Affairs, majoring in social work."

Explaining her reason for choosing to study social work, Ha said, "My greatest aspiration is to learn and help disadvantaged people in society." Ha is currently working in the education sector, at the Student Affairs Office of VTC Academy, supporting students, organising events, and participating in volunteer activities with students.

Ha said that in her current circumstances, she strives to maintain a spirit of sharing, "With my current job, although I haven't been able to support my family and relatives much, as a social worker, I am very empathetic and help those in difficult situations. While I may not be able to help much in terms of wealth and material things, I can help motivate the community through spirit, belief, and practical actions."

The stories of Doan, Ly, and Ha highlight how education can open doors for talented individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. By supporting these students, Swing for the Kids has helped them reach their academic goals and nurtured their potential to become valuable contributors to their communities.

The annual Swing for the Kids charity golf tournament has been organised annually by VIR since 2007 and aims to raise funds for scholarships for disadvantaged students with high academic achievements and to upgrade learning facilities.

In that time, the Organising Board has awarded over 21,000 scholarships totalling more than $880,000 to outstanding but deprived students from across the country who require financial support. It has also facilitated upgrades to the learning facilities across 40 cities and provinces nationwide.

The 17th annual Swing for the Kids charity golf tournament will take place on October 12 at the BRG Kings Island Golf Resort in Hanoi. The golf tournament promises to be a meeting point for golf-loving entrepreneurs and to bring together generous hearts to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
