SABIC's advanced materials propel GENBETA car to break Guinness World Record

This remarkable feat was unveiled and exhibited at the 2023 Hankook London E-Prix.

The GENBETA underwent an ultimate test by ABB FIA Formula E World championship drivers Jake Hughes (NEOM McLaren Formula E Team) and Lucas di Grassi (Mahindra Racing) in the Duals format, a qualifying method used for Formula E races.

In this rigorous trial, Jake Hughes achieved a top speed of 218.71kph, establishing a new world record. The GENBETA is a dynamic element of the GENBETA live development and innovation project, which aims to explore novel materials and technologies for future electric race and road cars.

Drawing on their development and material science expertise, SABIC played a pivotal role in designing and developing innovative components for the GENBETA, which is based on the Gen3 Formula E model.

This collaborative effort contributed to the creation of an electric car that is not only the fastest and most powerful, but also the lightest and most efficient, in line with SABIC's commitment to accelerating the global transition to electrification and carbon neutrality.

SABIC's engagement in the GENBETA programme and its integration within the project underscore the company's collaborative innovation partnership with the world's pioneering all-electric FIA World Championship.

SABIC's integrated materials in the GENBETA consist of highly engineered thermoplastics, allowing for design flexibility due to their inherent moldability. These thermoplastics contribute to improved aerodynamics, enhancing the car's speed and acceleration capabilities.

As SABIC collaborates with Formula E and its partners, it is drawing on a still-expanding portfolio of thermoplastics developed under dedicated solution platforms for electrification and the circular economy.

First announced as the electric racing series' principal innovation partner in 2022, SABIC intends to continue to work closely with Formula E to develop cutting-edge solutions that will help drive further innovation in electric vehicle technologies and sustainable practices across the sport’s wider ecosystem and operations.

As part of its presence at the London E-Prix, SABIC participated in Formula E’s sustainable innovation summit – Change. Accelerated. Live. – where it engaged in The Power of Prototypes panel discussion on the advantages that development projects like the GENBETA bring to the EV industry and the world.

Pioneering innovative sources of raw materials stands as a paramount mission for SABIC. As a global leader in the petrochemical industry, it has forged collaborations with numerous nations and enterprises to unearth novel reservoirs of raw materials, ultimately serving the cause of the circular economy.

Furthermore, in Vietnam, SABIC's commitment to sustainability takes concrete shape through collaborations with some of the nation's enterprises, paving the way for sustainable chemicals that resonate with today's evolving values.
