A quiet airport in the UK due to the COVID-19 epidemic |
By late March 15, Vietnam recorded three more patients with coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, two of whom are from the United Kingdom, bringing the total number of cases in Vietnam to 57.
So far, the number of COVID-19 patients from the UK in Vietnam has reached 13, accounting for over 80 per cent of foreign patients in the country, despite the fact that the number of tourists coming to Vietnam from the UK is always lower than China, South Korea, Japan, or the US. This has raised questions whether data on the pandemic in this country is correct as by noon of March 16, the number of infected cases in the UK was 1,391, with 35 deaths, while the numbers from the US are 3,782 and 69 and from South Korea are 8,236 and 75.
Sharing with British media, Patrick Vallance, chief scientific advisor to the UK government, said that according to his calculations, the actual number of coronavirus infections in the UK is likely to be between 5,000 and 10,000 people. He also predicted that the epidemic would peak in the UK in at least 10-14 weeks.
Since March 15, Vietnam has temporarily suspended entry for visitors from or having travelled through the Schengen area, the UK, or Northern Ireland within 14 days before their intended date of arrival in Vietnam, and has temporarily suspended visa issuance at the border. This policy is also applied for overseas Vietnamese holding foreign passports.
Earlier, the US government on March 14 also added the UK and Ireland to the list of 26 European countries temporarily banned from travelling to the country, which was released just three days earlier.
