Shopee, an e-commerce platform, displayed a product called "3D Unicharm mask from Japan” sold at a stellar ten times the regular price. According to information on Shopee, the seller is located in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi.
A representative of Shopee answered Zing.vn's queries that, “In this situation, Shopee disagrees with sellers who arbitrarily raise the price of healthcare products because of the coronavirus outbreak. We are strictly monitoring such activities and regularly work with salespeople to ensure the most appropriate price.”
Right afterreceiving complaints, the product was removed from Shopee. While the coronavirus is still a widespread epidemic quickly finding its way to countries around the world, people are spending a great deal on medical products like masks and dry hand-wash to protect their health, beating up prices and depleting stocks in many big cities like Hanoi, Danang, or Ho Chi Minh City.
Taking advantage of coronavirus, many merchants have raised prices by about four or five times to turn profit. However, the state has directed functional authorities to control the market price and many store owners have been fined for about VND20-30 million ($870-1,304.35) and forced to refund customers' money.
Previously, the Vietnam Directorate of Market Surveillance was tasked with strengthening oversight in order to detect and handle acts of profiteering from coronavirus, which in turn requested organisations and individuals to report all profiteering that takes advantage of the Coronavirus.
