"Nguyen Hue Street is a beautiful venue for the festival and open for everyone. I have experiences in holding popular puppet shows internationally so we're discussing making it an annual festival aimed at children," the festival director and deputy head of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vuong Duy Bien said.
There will be a variety of puppetry shown at the festival. The street will be turned into a giant stage for both water and regular puppetry. There will also be five small stages for rod string puppets. Other street performances will also be held.
A 6-metre tall puppet will be placed on the street. The Vietnam Puppet Theatre's Hon Que performance will open the festival which is a modern show with both water and other puppets. Phuong Nam Theatre, Hai Phong Puppet Theatre and Canh Dieu Theatre will also bring to their theatre various performances.
Children can learn more about puppetry and participate in workshops when visiting the nearby kiosks.
Nguyen Duc The, director of Phuong Nam Theatre, said, "We've been around the world and merged with a circus. This is an opportunity to promote our theatre and for our artists to be able to meet fellow performers and for them to be so close to the audience in such a nice location."
Over 1,500 children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the city will enjoy the festival and be given scholarships. The organisers will call for donations for the children.
