Australian and Vietnamese experts gathered in Hanoi on September 18 for the inaugural Vietnam State of Energy Transition (VSET) Conference.

The conference drew on Australian experience in developing its power sector, as well as conducting policy analysis and recommendation of practical pathways for Vietnam to achieve a reliable, affordable, and decarbonised electricity system, aligned with Vietnam’s Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8).

The conference was part of the Future of Electricity in Vietnam (FE-V) programme launched in 2022 by the Australian government, with the coordination and participation of the Vietnamese Communist Party’s Central Economic Commission (CEC) and key Vietnamese energy agencies.

Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Andrew Goledzinowski, said, “Australia and Vietnam have so much to share with each other about how we are managing our energy transitions. This conference is a platform for us to have these frank conversations, informed by insights and reflections on what we are doing well, and not so well, in Australia.”

"At the heart of this cooperation, is the growing understanding and trust Australia and Vietnam have with greater engagement and interactions between our energy agencies, based on shared challenges and opportunities of the energy transition. This deepening cooperation highlights our commitment to Vietnam’s energy future, further strengthening our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“By leveraging Australia's experience in energy transition, we aim to support Vietnam in achieving a reliable, affordable, and decarbonised power system,” he added.

Deputy director general in charge of the industry department under the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Economic Commission, Nguyen Ngoc Trung, highlighted that FE-V is a meaningful initiative launched by the Australian embassy in Vietnam in the context of the robust ongoing transition. The research results under FE-V have provided good reference points to inform relevant stakeholders in the energy sector about suitable solutions during Vietnam’s energy transition process.

Trung noted that the conference would also serve as a platform to strengthen connections between public and private sector stakeholders from the two countries.
