The event was held at Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre Hall 3 in Kuala Lumpur.
Tuấn lifted 149kg in clean-and-jerk and 120kg in snatch, taking the lead with a total lift of 269kg. It is the Việt Nam delegation’s first gold medal of the day.
“Following the failure at the Brazil Olympics, I decided to train hard. This is not my best result, but I am satisfied with it,” Tuấn said.
Indonesian Surahmat pocketed the silver medal with his result of 267kg, while the bronze medal went to Witoon Mingmoon of Thailand (259kg).
The men’s 56kg discipline witnessed a competition among six lifters from Việt Nam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, as well as Myanmar and the Philippines.
Tuấn had won a silver and two bronze medals at the 2011 World Junior Weightlifting Championships in Malaysia. He also bagged a bronze medal at the world event two years ago and a silver medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014.
In the men’s 56kg category, the 23-year-old from Bình Thuận Province is ranked among the world’s leading players, only behind Yun Chol of North Korea and Wu Jingbiao of China.
Tuấn’s victory increased Việt Nam’s medal tally in Kuala Lumpur to 54 gold medals.
