A Vietnamese tennis player has become the first to win a gold medal at an Asian competition after he beat a second-seeded Filipino rival in the final on Friday at the second Asian Youth Games held in Nanjing, China.

Ly Hoang Nam, 16, came from behind to defeat Jurence Mendoza of the Philippines 2-1 (6-7, 7-5, 7-5) after nearly three hours of thrilling play at the Nanjing Sport Institute.

Nam got started by constantly putting pressure on the serve of Mendoza, and was only subdued by his opponent in the tie-break (4-7) to close the first set at 6-7 after more than one hour.

The Vietnamese evened the score in the second set when he roared back to win two successive games following a 5-5 tie. Mendoza had blown two chances to break Nam’s serve by wasting a 40-15 lead on both occasions.
