"With a multi-modal logistics solution that integrates technological advancements and sustainable development, along with the ability to connect regional supply chains, Vietnam SuperPort will significantly boost cross-border e-commerce in Vietnam," said Yap Kwong Weng, CEO of Vietnam SuperPort, at the 2024 E-Commerce Connectivity and Development Forum held on November 26 at the Hanoi Museum.

The event focused on the potential, development opportunities, and solutions to support businesses engaging in cross-border e-commerce. At the forum, Vietnam SuperPort's leadership shared comprehensive logistics solutions that will help businesses in Vietnam, as well as the China-ASEAN region, enhancing their integration in the cross-border e-commerce market.

Opportunities and challenges for logistics businesses

In 2023, the total revenue from business-to-consumer transactions on e-commerce platforms registered in Vietnam reached approximately VND498.9 trillion ($19.6 billion). The combined revenue of the top five e-commerce platforms: Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, Sendo, and Tiktok Shop, amounted to VND233.2 trillion ($9.2 billion), a 53.4 per cent increase compared to 2022, according to e-commerce data analytics platform Metric.

According to Deloitte's analysis, Vietnam has a developing e-commerce market and steady growth potential. However, experts argue that the biggest challenge for Vietnamese businesses is the high logistics costs and the logistics infrastructure supporting cross-border e-commerce.

"Cross-border e-commerce requires a transparent and secure logistics system to ensure smooth processes. Additionally, the ability to connect domestic and international supply hubs is also a key issue that needs to be prioritised. Especially in the context of regulations aimed at greening the supply chain from production to the end user, the application of sustainable development solutions in logistics must also receive special attention," said Weng.

Strengthening seamless e-commerce across Asia

Located at the heart of the Northern Economic Corridor, Vietnam SuperPort directly connects to over 20 industrial parks, major seaports, and airports, extending to Yunnan and Kunming in China. The project also plays a key strategic role as a link in the ASEAN Smart Logistics Network, connecting Vietnam with China and other ASEAN countries. Additionally, leveraging YCH Group’s nearly 70 years of experience in logistics, Vietnam SuperPort benefits from its connection to supply chain hubs across Asia.

According to Weng, connectivity across Asia and a multimodal approach, integrating road, air, rail, and sea in ‘one-stop’, will allow businesses to access supply chain solutions across the region and flexibly choose the most cost-effective and suitable transportation method for their business demands.

Leveraging technological advancements

Previously, at the Innovate Vietnam 2024, this enterprise unveiled a comprehensive digital transformation roadmap which leverages cutting-edge technologies, including AI to drive efficiency and sustainability in the logistics sector. Specifically, Vietnam SuperPort will collaborate with YCH Group to develop AI-driven automation, warehouse robotics, and transport management solutions. These advanced technologies will enhance operational workflows, accelerate order fulfilment, and improve inventory control.

"The integrated digital ecosystem, which includes AI-powered warehouse management and transportation software, will support real-time inventory tracking, demand forecasting, and performance measurement. This ecosystem will also enhance cargo security and assist businesses in developing optimal transportation and business plans," Weng added.

Weng also mentioned an innovative AI-powered logistics marketplace being developed by Vietnam SuperPort and its global partners. This platform is designed to link small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), financial institutions, and logistics providers worldwide, ensuring transparency and facilitating businesses' access to capital. Vietnam SuperPort aims to strengthen cargo capacities at Vietnam's terminals while enhancing support for the growth of SMEs across the country.

The initiative seeks to collaborate with both local and international logistics companies to help develop the SME ecosystem, starting from Vinh Phuc province. In addition, to support its goal of becoming the first net-zero logistics hub in Southeast Asia by 2040, Vietnam SuperPort will also develop a blockchain-based environmental, social, and governance management system to track carbon emissions.
