A Generative AI skills training programme for teachers will be implemented on a national scale in Vietnam, promoting AI integration in education.

This was the main content discussed at the meeting on August 27 between Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son and representatives of STEAM for Vietnam, a non-profit organisation specialising in applying technology to education and training.

The meeting focused on discussing matters related to cooperating in implementing the AI education programme for teachers in Vietnam.

The initiative is led by STEAM for Vietnam, focusing on applying Generative AI (GenAI) for teachers. The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) states that this is a national-scale initiative in Vietnam to promote GenAI for educators. According to the MoET, this is a national-scale programme in Vietnam on popularising GenAI for teachers.

Dr. Tran Viet Hung, founder of STEAM for Vietnam, said, “GenAI can help teachers unlock potential, support teachers in brainstorming, detailed teaching planning, marking and providing detailed comments for each student, assisting and tutoring students, translating content in other languages to create rich and personalised teaching content.”

Hung added that the application of GenAI in teaching in Vietnam is still new and mainly proactively approached by teachers on an individual level. "However, teachers are very excited about learning new knowledge and have more or less applied it to daily tasks. STEAM for Vietnam and partners are introducing a GenAI programme for teachers systematically for the first time,” Hung said.

This GenAI application skills training scheme for Vietnamese teachers involves a team of lecturers who are engineers working in AI around the world.

The programme is expected to include six lessons, which include prompt writing techniques and lesson planning with GenAI, creating detailed lesson content with ChatGPT, designing stories and characters, creating tests and personalised assessments, automating daily tasks, and more.

Speaking at the meeting, Son said, “Currently, the education sector is actively promoting STEAM activities and AI in schools for students. In particular, the ministry focuses on training teachers and lecturers to have the necessary skills and knowledge in exploiting AI tools, helping with teaching and learning.”

The deputy minister requests that relevant parties collaborate to propose and implement suitable initiatives in select areas and identify key teachers for participation. He also hopes that, following the programme, teachers will develop thematic content to create model learning materials and build a comprehensive repository of GenAI applications in teaching.
