Today Sumitomo Osaka Cement officially inaugurated its first plant in Vietnam with the total investment of $62.5 million.

The plant is specialised in manufacturing cathode materials for lithium ion battery, an essential material in the energy revolution. The newly-inaugurated plant is built on an over 56,000 square metre premise with the designed productivity of 2,000 tonmes per year. The productivity is readily scalable up to 10,000 tonnes per year in line with the market demand.

SOC’s lithium iron cathode is highly rated for outstanding safety, long life, power storage properties and quality control system.

Yoshihiko Sumitani, SOC Vietnam’s general director said: “We are working hard to promote the development and mass production of lithium iron phosphate as a cathode material for use in lithium-ion batteries. We vision to deliver our product all over the world and we have acquired a global patent licence covering the production and sale of lithium iron phosphate worldwide.

The limited production capacity of the trial plant in Japan could not meet up with our growth demands. Hence, the new plant in Vietnam will be a solid foundation to expand our lithium-ion battery cathode material business the region and in the globe. We are now in a good condition to take advantage of Vietnam’s talents and raw materials for our plant operation and we, in turn, will transfer our technology, knowledge and experience to Vietnam’s staff.”

Established in Vietnam in 2011, SOC Vietnam plans to expand its workforce annually, heavily investing in the research and development centre and closely collaborate with Vietnam’s universities. Currently, it is taking up a great number of hi-tech students from Polytechnics University, which will contribute to SOC Vietnam’s strategy of knowledge transfer in Vietnam.
