When resource depletion adversely impacts the three fundamental components of economics, society, and environment, sustainable development becomes a crucial requirement.

As a leading supplier of speciality chemicals, Sika® has introduced new biomass-balanced technology, opening the path for the inclusion of sustainable development into Sikagard®-5500 covering layer protecting concrete.

According to the Ministry of Construction, the ratio of urbanisation in the first half of 2022 reached 41 per cent. Meanwhile, the number of “green buildings” in Vietnam has barely surpassed 200 in the last 10 years. Faced with this and the pressing need to meet net-zero goals, the globe is attempting to transition to greener products and solutions to help prevent natural resource depletion.

Jacobo Perez Polaino, Sika® Vietnam’s general manager said, “By localising cutting-edge technology from local demands, Sika® consistently produces pioneering and game-changing products and solutions. Sikagard®-5500 and its concrete protection coating is regarded as the pinnacle of the application research adventure of employing recycled resources in the manufacturing of building materials, as well as our response to the green and sustainable development dilemma.”

The concrete covering layer of Sikagard®-5500 had a major presence at Vietnam Green Building Week 2022, owing to its pioneering by adopting biomass-balanced production technology for building materials on the market.

Groundbreaking solutions

According to Sika® Vietnam, Sikagard®-5500 offers a durable solution that successfully employs biomass-balanced technology. The product will help to reduce carbon emissions by extending construction lifespans, assuring high performance, and having a lower impact on the environment and customer health.

The biomass-balanced approach is a combination of fossil-based resources and biology-based resources. The extraction and mixing procedure must assure a wide range of indices and compatibility, which can result in benefits such as safety and environmental compatibility. The application of such technology also helps to create a cycle of resource regeneration.

Moreover, Sika® also has a series of eco-friendly solutions from basements to roofs, helping sustainable construction, minimising energy consumption by up to 15 per cent, and making cities greener. During Vietnam Green Building Week 2022, Sika® introduced alternatives to sand and cement in construction product formulations for greater efficiency and sustainability. These products included Sikagrout®-800 and its high-performance, low-carbon mortar; and SikaCeram®-252 Impact, the first Portland cement-free tile adhesive on the market.

With the philosophy of “Building Trust, Beyond the Expected”, Sika® Vietnam has made highly practical contributions to encourage green building activities, create good living values, and contribute to the conservation of the environment, resources, and human health.

Furthermore, Sika® is helping to realise its pledge of working with the Vietnamese government to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 through sustainable and creative solutions.
