The $1.3 billion Lego factory in the southern province of Binh Duong, the first from Denmark's Lego Group to be designed as a carbon-neutral facility, is expected to be up and running by year-end, and will be the group's most sustainable factory to date.
In addition to solar panels on the roof, the factory also has a solar power farm built on the neighbouring land to meet the demand for energy.
The factory will use state-of-the-art, energy-efficient production equipment and is built to the minimum level of the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold – a globally recognised green building certification.
The factory is Lego's sixth globally and second in Asia. According to Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of Lego Group, there are three reasons why Lego chose Vietnam.
"First, Vietnam has a large trained labour force to meet the needs of this high-tech factory. Second, the Vietnamese government has a strong vision for sustainable development and emissions reduction in line with our own. And finally, Vietnam has excellent trade relations with countries in the Asia-Pacific region," Christiansen said.
VIR has included a series of photographs to illustrate the construction journey of the biggest ever project in Binh Duong province and the biggest ever Danish project in Vietnam so far as it nears completion.
