The opening of Bac Giang-Lang Son Expressway has reduced travel time from Hanoi to Lang Son from 3.5 to 2.5 hours.
The expressway will help reduce traffic congestions on National Highway 1 and boost local production and development, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said at the opening ceremony.
It runs from National Highway No.1’s section between Mai Sao commune in Chi Lang district of Lang Son to and Hanoi-Bac Giang area, in parallel to a strip of National Highway No.1A.
The four-lane expressway is 64km long, 25m wide, has a designed speed of 100km per hour, and will collect tolls for 17 years (2020-2037).
The expressway is part of the Bac Giang-Lang Son BOT project with the investment value of more than VND12.19 trillion ($530 million). Another part of the project is to improve the surface of a 105km stretch of National Highway No.1.
In this February, the prime minister approved adding the VND5.6 billion ($243,500) Chi Lang-Huu Nghi Expressway to the Bac Giang-Lang Son project. The expressway will reduce congestions and boost socio-economic development in the northern provinces and cities and between Vietnam and China.
Work on the expressway began in October 2015 and was scheduled for completion last year. However, the Ministry of Transport had to select a new investor after the original one ran out of capital.
Vietnam will have 6,411km of highways under the national development plan until 2020, with vision to 2030, Deputy PM Dung said. Bac Giang is an emerging manufacturing base in northern Vietnam, and Lang Son is an example for promoting the economic strength of border gates.
