As planned, FacePay will officially run in 25 of 80 stores of GS25 in early 2021. Subsequently, GS25 will extend the payment method to the whole chain.

Wee Digital founder Christian Nguyen said that the FacePay system can process up to 50 million faces per second. It is also the first stage of technologies that Wee Digital desires to launch in the Vietnamese market.

“Wee Digital insists user experience comes first. We are trying to simplify and ease payments, and want to change customer behaviour, making it better,” he said.

Christian said that transactions via QR code or e-wallets account for a small portion of the Vietnamese market. Therefore, there is a lot of space to adopt different approaches to transactions – adding that facial recognition could offer the most frictionless experience.

Mai Thuy Nhan, CEO of GS25 Vietnam believed that the facial payment technology of Wee Digital will bring an interesting experience for customers, especially young people who use e-wallets such as ZaloPay, VNPAY, or MoMo.

“The new payment we are going to use is quite a bit different from other non-cash payments. With the new facial payment, all people need to do is take the items, come to the counter, give a smile, and leave.”

To use FacePay, customers need to download the app, link a bank account, and register their facial information. Their face then becomes the "password" to make payments at FacePay transaction points without having to take anything else, including mobile phones.
