Talk show: Strengthening partnership to better eye care in Vietnam |
Vietnam is grappling with a significant burden of eye diseases, with myopia (near-sightedness) emerging as a particularly concerning issue. Data from 2023 compiled by the Ministry of Health reveals that refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism) are becoming increasingly common among adolescents, with an incidence of 15-20 per cent in rural students and 30-40 per cent in cities, while cataracts rank as the main cause of blindness.
Facing the situation, Vietnamese people are becoming more aware of the importance of eye care and are increasingly seeking products and services to maintain and improve their vision.
According to Statista, the Vietnamese eye care market is poised to hit $39.68 million in revenue in 2024, with a projected annual growth rate of 5.32 per cent until 2028. This growth reflects increasing demand for a range of eye care equipment, including corrective eyewear like glasses for near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, and multifocal lenses.
Undoubtedly, medicalequipment is also a key factor that can decide the effectiveness of medical services, actively supporting physicians in diagnosing and treating diseases in a more accurate, fast, safe, and effective manner. Each year, innovations in medical equipment are bringing more benefits to patients, including those who suffer from eye-related issues.
Nevertheless, reputable foreign medical equipment manufacturers often rarely or do not directly operate in Vietnam, leading to the fact that hospitals which want to invest still face many barriers due to a lack of advice and support from industry experts.
This has propelled the formation of a partnership between DKSH, Alcon, and Saigon Eye Hospital. Over the past decade of cooperation, DKSH, Alcon and Saigon Eye Hospital have added a lot of value to the ophthalmology industry with advanced products and solutions to bring brighter eyes to millions of Vietnamese people.
Dr. Hoang Trung Kien, north regional director, CEO – Sai Gon Vinh Eye Hospital, and vice chairman of Ophthalmology Medical Advisory Board at Medical Saigon Group, said, “We fully trust in our cooperation and the use of Alcon's products for the treatment of patients in Vietnam. This collaboration isn't just a three-way partnership; it's a five-way collaboration: firstly, benefiting the patients, secondly benefiting the doctors who use Alcon's equipment, and thirdly, the partnership between MSG, DKSH, and Alcon.”
Shalav Modi, Southeast Asia head, GEM, Alcon added,“With a good partner like DKSH, we can work together, penetrate better, and reach out to more people, and help more people see clearly without having to be physically present here. So, all in all, DKSH has been working with us for quite a long time, and they’ve got a good amount of field service people who go and service our doctors.”
Mai Thi Viet Ha, business line manager, Ophthalmology Medical Devices, Business Unit Healthcare, DKSH Vietnam said, “DKSH takes immense pride in our strategic partnership with Alcon, facilitating the introduction of their latest technologies and techniques into the Vietnamese ophthalmology industry, notably within the Saigon Eye Hospital system. The Saigon Eye Hospital has consistently placed trust in and utilised Alcon products throughout its history.”
