The move is in accordance with Directive No.05/CT-TTg dated February 14, which ensures a sufficient amount of coal and gas for electricity production. It also aims to support EVN during this year's peak dry season.
The gas will be supplied to the Phu My 3 thermal power plant in the period of April-May, making up for approximately 500 million kWh in the power grid. The Al Jassasiya vessel is projected to supply nearly 70,000 tonnes of LNG from Ras Laffan, Qatar.
PV Gas is the first and only enterprise qualified for LNG import and export in Vietnam, as it is the only one to own the required infrastructure since July last year.
The energy giant is looking for support from local authorities to resolve policy knots related to mechanisms and infrastructure in Vietnam towards building a transparent and sustainable trading market for gas.
According to EVN, it is crucial to secure an LNG supply for electricity production, as it will be the primary source for gas-fired turbines in the future.
"EVN has instructed the National Load Dispatch Centre to start using LNG and suppliers have been contracted to commence operations at the plant in the southeast region on April 15," said Nguyen Quoc Trung, deputy director of the National Load Dispatch Centre.
"This will mark the first time ever that LNG is being used for electricity generation in Vietnam, making it a new and highly efficient fuel source for the country," Trung added.
