With 189km of coastline, 22 national-level cultural and historical relics, and more than 50 provincial-level cultural relics across 34 ethnic groups, Phu Yen today is known as a beach resort destination with unique cultural tourism.

The natural and cultural conditions are energised with the widely connected transport infrastructure. After 30 years of development, roads, airways, railways, and waterways have gradually improved.

Besides that, aviation is increasingly developing and the number of passengers and flights at Tuy Hoa Airport is increasing. Airports Corporation of Vietnam has planned to upgrade the airport into an international facility with a capacity of five million annual passengers.

That would be a very favourable condition for Phu Yen to both develop marine economy and link regions for development, thereby promoting the socio-economy in the coming period.

In addition to other factors of infrastructure, natural conditions, the investment environment and so forth, Phu Yen has met the conditions for fast and sustainable development.

What are the current factors that Phu Yen needs to exploit effectively?

First, Phu Yen has to focus on building the provincial plan for the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050. Currently, Phu Yen suggests hiring foreign consultants to combine with domestic consultants for provincial planning.

By 2030, Phu Yen aims to develop marine economic sectors in order of priority, such as marine tourism and services, aquaculture and fishing, the maritime economy, coastal industry, renewable energy, and the new marine economy, as well as exploitation of other marine resources and minerals.

Phu Yen needs to perfect policies on sustainable development of the marine economy, a green growth model in science-technology, and high-quality human resources. Also imperative is building multi-objective infrastructure and strategic connections along routes between localities in the province and neighbouring provinces.

What do you believe is the key strategy for Phu Yen in the near future?

The strategic vision is overcoming the existing problems of the localities ahead, especially in the area of planning and management of the country.

First, we must build a provincial plan with a vision of long-term sustainability based on the province’s existing advantages, especially its marine economy, as well as take advantage of national trends and international economic movements.

Second, there is a need to improve the quality of state management, especially in building cadre and civil servants in both ethics and qualifications. At the same time, it needs to have a strategy to attract and train highly-qualified and skilled human resources.

Third, focus must be placed on attracting social resources to invest in infrastructure and social fields of the province, especially in the fields of healthcare, culture, and education.

Finally, protecting the environment and responding to climate change is a must. In the current context, to develop tourism and to ensure quality of life, the environment needs to be protected.
