The elevated section of the Nhon-Hanoi metro line is expected to officially open in July, following more than ten years of construction.

Once operational, the new metro line will create more favourable travelling conditions for Hanoians, and contribute to easing traffic jams. At present, Hanoi has the elevated Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro line, which has been operating for nearly three years and has become a popular mode of public transport.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the Nhon - Hanoi railway station metro line will have the elevated session operated first with a length of 8.5km out of the entire 12.5km route. This section consists of eight stations, starting from Nhon station to Cau Giay station, running through the districts of North Tu Liem, South Tu Liem, and Cau Giay.

"The elevated section of the Nhon - Hanoi railway station line has completed the entire construction, equipment installation, and trial operation processes, with 57 different scenarios over the courses of seven weeks from March 11 to April 26. Currently, it is only waiting for the final inspection stages to be completed," a representative of the Hanoi Urban Rail Management Board said.

A representative of the operating unit, Hanoi Metro Company, said they were actively implementing and coordinating with relevant authorities to develop procedures for train maintenance and line operations.

"We are coordinating with the project owner and consultants to evaluate the system's safety as assessed by an independent consulting organisation; developing a fare policy based on the current fare policy applied for the Cat Linh - Ha Dong line; and developing a detailed operation plan and temporary unit prices to place orders for operations similar to the Cat Linh - Ha Dong line," said Vu Hong Truong, general director of Hanoi Metro Company.

In addition to technical aspects, over 350 personnel have also been trained and are ready for the project.

Previously, 10 train sets for this rail line have been granted Certificates of Quality, Technical Safety, and Environmental Protection for Rail Transport Vehicles by the Vietnam Register.

The Hanoi Urban Rail Project Management Board said that obtaining these certificates is an important milestone, ensuring that the train sets meet all quality, safety, and environmental standards, and are eligible for operation on the railway. According to the plan, the elevated section of the metro line (from Nhon to Cau Giay) will start commercial operations in July 2024.

The opening of the Nhon - Hanoi railway station rail line is highly anticipated by all residents of the capital city, as it is one of the routes passing through the highest number of universities in Hanoi.

This important project is expected to address the shortcomings of the existing public transportation system, meet the increasing travel needs of residents, and move towards a civilised, modern, and sustainably developed Hanoi.
