The Institute of Construction Economics (ICE) under the Ministry of Construction and Hai Duong Department of Construction organised a workshop on "Promoting the Adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Framework" within the northern province on May 30.

BIM is the holistic process of creating and managing information for a built asset. Based on an intelligent model and enabled by a cloud platform, BIM integrates structured, multidisciplinary data to produce a digital representation of an asset across its lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and operations.

Attracting delegates from various departments, committees, sectors, BIM experts, and representatives of local enterprises, the event marked a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Autodesk and ICE. It also showcased the strong commitment of both parties to promoting digital transformation and BIM application within the construction industry in Vietnam.

The event in Hai Duong was the first in a series of workshops, aimed at raising awareness about BIM, which is included in an MoU signed between Autodesk and ICE in September 2023. This follows the success of the first MoU signed in 2015, which aimed to disseminate a BIM application roadmap and raise awareness of this technology nationwide.

Autodesk will act as a strategic partner, supporting ICE in promoting BIM adoption and digital transformation in the construction industry, contributing to the realisation of the BIM adoption roadmap approved by the PM in March 2023.

With the aim of promoting a modern construction industry, the workshop programme focuses on key topics ranging from an overview of BIM, principles and policies of BIM implementation in Vietnam, and the digitisation of workflows for deployment, submission, and approval of BIM, to successful BIM applications in Vietnam, integrating BIM-GIS in urban planning and smart city construction management.

Sharing with the delegates at the workshop, Ta Ngoc Binh, head of the Investment Economics and Digital Construction Research Department under ICE, emphasised the importance of BIM in enhancing the state's management capacity in construction, as well as improving the efficiency of the industry. Digital transformation in the construction industry is an inevitable trend, where BIM is not only a technology but also a new working method. It helps optimise the design, construction, and management processes of projects, minimising risks and saving costs.

However, the implementation of BIM within state economic sectors still faces numerous challenges. To address this, the government issued Decision No. 2500/QD-TTg in 2016 which designated ICE as the standing agency of the BIM Steering Committee - Ministry of Construction. The outcomes of the project have been materialised through numerous activities, most notably the policy directions that facilitate the early adoption of BIM and contribute to establishing a solid legal framework for development.

Also at the workshop, a representative from Autodesk Vietnam shared insights into what BIM is, data standards, and BIM implementation processes based on successful experiences in Singapore. They also introduced various BIM applications in project management, design, construction, and facility operation.

“With our technological foundation and extensive experience, Autodesk is committed to partnering with Hai Duong province in particular, and the Vietnamese government and strategic partners in general, in driving the digital transformation of the construction industry. We believe that BIM will be a powerful tool to help Vietnam achieve its sustainable development goals," the Autodesk representative affirmed.

The workshop aimed to enable the effective application of BIM in the near future, in accordance with the roadmap set forth by the government. The initiative demonstrates the province's determination to lead the digital transformation of the construction industry. The workshop also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to share experiences, address concerns, and collaboratively develop effective BIM implementation plans within the province.

Speaking at the workshop, Nguyen Tan Vinh, president of ICE, expressed his trust that Hai Duong will become one of the leading provinces in the application of BIM in Vietnam. He also emphasised the importance of digital transformation and BIM application in the construction industry, while affirming the key role of ICE in coordinating with local construction departments and partners like Autodesk to drive this process forward.

"We hope that the BIM adoption roadmap in Hai Duong will not only be confined to today's workshop but will continue to be vigorously implemented in the future with the commitment and collaboration from all parties," Vinh stated.

As the strategic partner of the Institute of Construction Economics, Autodesk's representative in Vietnam, Truong Thuy Linh also expressed her confidence in Hai Duong's success in pioneering BIM's application.

"The workshop in Hai Duong is not just a standalone event, but the beginning of a series of collaborative activities between Autodesk, ICE, and localities across the country. Following Hai Duong, similar workshops will be organised in Haiphong, Quang Ninh, and many other provinces. With extensive experience and advanced technology, Autodesk is confident in standing alongside ICE, governmental departments, and Vietnamese enterprises to build the BIM future in Vietnam," affirmed Linh.

With the determination of the government, the support of Autodesk, and the efforts of localities like Hai Duong, it is expected that the application of BIM in construction in Vietnam will soon make significant strides, contributing to the development of a modern, efficient, competitive, and sustainable construction industry.
